Train with a precise focus !
Why do you need to have days with a specific focus ?
” In the morning, as soon as I wake up, I take my collection of martial arts notes, read a random or inspiring “technique” and make sure that it accompanies me for the rest of the day, motivating me to take the necessary actions to achieve improvement and a greater understanding of its use in combat. “
Quote by Andrea
The method I am about to explain forces you to focus on a specific strike, fighting technique, position, stance, defense, or strategy, etc. to develop the right biomechanics and motor skills, which allows you to actually make the technique work with an uncooperative training partner or attacker.
This focus is a very important aspect if you really want to learn to use the moves you study and not simply perform a choreography that may be nice to look at but unusable in a real context because you don’t know how to make it work.
Clearly during sparring you have to be intelligent enough to understand that whether you execute it or suffer it, you are not training to win, because in any case you have set limits for yourself by using and privileging a certain blow or approach for that session, but you need it to develop a real improvement in your ability to use a certain blow.
Let me give you an example, if it’s low kick , the whole training day is focused on that type of kick, defense, technique, etc.
That’s your focus for that day .
Your attention must be used for:
- Train and study the shot technically, first slow, then slow and precise, then fast and precise, finally fast, precise and powerful.
- Study the balance, the body position, the power, the guard , the areas you leave uncovered, the posture, the distance from which that shot should be thrown, etc. etc.
- Train and do a technical study of combinations on that shot
- I train and study the possible targets of that shot.
- Train and study how to insert the shot into combination (2 shots – 3 shots – 4 shots and 5 shots).
- Study the possible saves for this shot (dodges, parries, etc.) and have a teammate shoot it.
- I study the feints and tricks to hit this shot effectively on target.
- Perform sparring with the aim of using the chosen strike a lot (example low kick)
To further complement and enhance this approach, your attention should be given to:
- Training and Technically Studying the Shot:
- Practice the strike at different speeds and intensities, moving from slow and controlled movements to fast and powerful ones. Focus on balance, body position, power, guard and posture, identifying the vulnerable areas and the optimal distance to execute the strike effectively.
- Study of Combinations and Targets:
- Explore and study the various combinations that include the selected shot, practicing the insertion of the shot in sequences of two, three, four or five movements. Analyze the possible targets of the shot and develop strategies to hit accurately.
- Study of Parries and Counters:
- Practice parries and counters against the selected strike, both as a passive defense and as an active response. Practice with a training partner who performs the strike to develop quick and effective reactions.
- Study of Feints and Tricks:
- Explore various feints and tricks to deceive your opponent and deliver the shot effectively and unpredictably. Work on the art of manipulation and control of your opponent through the use of strategic feints.
- Sparring Execution with Focus on the Chosen Strike:
- During sparring, focus on the frequent and targeted use of the selected strike (for example, the low kick). Make an effort to integrate the strike into your fighting strategies and adapt it to the opponent’s reactions.
To complement this approach, also consider:
- Video Analysis: Record your workout sessions to analyze your movement and track your progress over time.
- Coach Feedback: Ask your coaches for specific feedback to improve your techniques.
- Mental Training: Integrate visualization exercises to improve focus and confidence.
- Tactical Adaptation: Explore how to adapt your strike to the context of the fight.
- Studying Adversary Reactions: Observe and study your opponents’ reactions to develop counter-strategies.
- Scenario Variation: Simulate different combat situations for a more complete understanding of the practical applications of the techniques learned.
- Partner Collaboration: Work with training partners of different skill levels to gain experience against a variety of fighting styles.
By integrating these elements into your training approach, you can further improve your fighting skills and understanding of martial techniques.
How to do this exercise on a precise focus
In my gym I built by carving symbols representing the blows and various parts of the body into wooden blocks the size of dominoes.
On the left the foot, hand, knee, elbow, head, shoulder, etc. strike and on the right the area to be hit, high, medium, low or empty which means free, then there are some blocks which are a little man standing, a little man fighting and mixed which means the strategy of the day.
You can also use slips of paper or cards, that’s fine too.
At the beginning of the lesson everyone takes a pad at random and when you do free exercises or do sparring you have to try to use this technique a lot and build a specific strategy to apply the blow you have on the pad.
Note that if your partner knows what shot you are throwing, it is easier for him to parry or dodge but it forces you to be even more precise, more ” hidden ” and to develop the right strategies/tricks to make the shot work.
Precise Focus Exercise: Practical Outline
- Preparing the Tools:
- Wooden blocks or slips of paper with symbols representing strokes and body parts.
- Left: list of strikes (foot, hand, knee, elbow, head, shoulder, etc.).
- Right: zones to hit (high, medium, low, empty).
- Blocks with symbols: standing man, fighting man, mixed man (represents the strategy of the day).
- Focus Assignment:
- At the beginning of the lesson, each participant randomly takes a pad or a piece of paper.
- Practical Application:
- During free practice or sparring, focus on using the assigned strike or strategy.
- Build a specific strategy to apply the shot or technique based on the symbol obtained.
- Considerations during the Exercise:
- If your partner knows the move you’re trying to use, it makes it easier for him to parry or dodge.
- This forces you to be more precise and develop strategies to make the shot effective, even when your opponent is aware of your target.
- Final Goal:
- Develop the ability to accurately and effectively apply a variety of strikes and strategies, even in situations where the opponent is aware of your intended movements.
- Benefits of the Method:
- Focusing training on a single element at a time reduces dispersion and allows for deeper learning.
- Improves the ability to perform techniques in real contexts and not just in choreographic exercises.
- It promotes the development of strategies and tricks to make shots work effectively even against uncooperative opponents.
This targeted training method offers an effective opportunity to improve fighting skills and develop a better understanding of martial techniques.
List of Tangible Benefits of the Precise Focus Method
The Precise Focus method is not just a training strategy: it is a transformative approach that changes the way you learn, perfect and apply fighting techniques. Here is a detailed explanation of its key benefits:
1. You will improve the accuracy and power of your shots
- Pinpoint Precision : Focusing on one shot at a time allows you to analyze every single detail of the technique, from the position of the guard to the angle of the shot, to the ideal distance from the target. This intensive study eliminates errors and helps you hit with surgical precision.
- Maximizing Power : Focusing solely on one shot allows you to develop optimal biomechanics, generating the most power possible. You will learn to make the most of body movement, torso torque, and energy transfer to make every shot devastating.
Imagine being able to throw a low kick with such precision that it hits the most vulnerable spot on your opponent’s leg, every single time.
2. You will be able to apply each technique even in stressful situations
- Movement automation : Repeating a technique until you have mastered it completely helps you turn it into an automatic reflex. This way, you do not have to “think” about what to do, but you will act instinctively even under pressure.
- Adapting to Variables : Practicing against partners who know your target teaches you to be more creative and adaptable. This increases your ability to execute the shot in unpredictable situations or against experienced opponents.
- Tension Management : Focusing on one strike at a time reduces mental overload, helping you stay calm and focused during combat, even when stress levels are high.
In a real-world scenario, this means that your body will react before your mind has time to doubt.
3. You will increase your confidence in your fighting tools
- Confidence in Your Ability : When you know a strike has been perfected, your confidence in being able to use it effectively increases. This confidence is essential in both training and real combat situations.
- Winning Mentality : The constant repetition of a movement gives you a sense of control and mastery, which is also reflected in your posture, your energy and your presence during the fight.
- Psychological preparation : Knowing that you have worked in a targeted and in-depth way on each technique allows you to face any opponent with the awareness of having the resources to respond effectively.
When you have confidence in your shots, your opponent senses it, and it can make the difference between controlling the fight or losing.
4. You will reduce the time it takes to learn techniques
- Focus on a specific goal : Focusing your training on just one element at a time speeds up learning, because it eliminates distractions and dispersion. You are not trying to master everything at once, but perfecting one stroke at a time.
- Muscle Memory Development : Through constant and conscious repetition, your body learns to perform the movement naturally. This drastically reduces the time it takes to go from theory to actual practice.
- Measurable Progress : By working one step at a time, it is easier to track improvements and identify areas to work on. This structured approach makes the entire process more efficient and satisfying.
With this method, you no longer have to spend weeks or months learning techniques that you don’t know how to use: you learn less, but you learn better.
Extra Benefits of the Method
- Universal Application : Whether you are practicing striking, grappling or self-defense, the method adapts perfectly to every discipline.
- Better use of time : Every minute of training is focused and productive, allowing you to achieve more even with short sessions.
- Technical Awareness : You not only learn the “how” but also the “why” of each movement, making your actions more effective and strategic.
Why is it Important?
The Focus Preciso method teaches you that you don’t need to know a thousand techniques, but to really master a few fundamental ones. It’s the approach that makes the difference between those who practice for passion and those who want to be effective in any situation, inside and outside the gym.

Benefits of the Precise Focus Approach
Taking a focused and methodical approach to training offers significant benefits that go far beyond the simple execution of techniques. This method helps you develop real mastery, transforming your skills into practical and effective tools. Here are the main benefits explained in detail:
1. Reduction of dispersion
Focusing on a single aspect at a time eliminates the risk of wasting energy and attention, which often causes superficial learning.
- Eliminate Cognitive Overload : Tackling too many techniques at once leads to confusion and incomplete understanding. Precise Focus allows you to absorb every detail without stress.
- Maximize training time : Every minute is dedicated to improving a single element, ensuring measurable and consistent progress.
Example : If you focus on a right jab, you can work exclusively on accuracy, posture, power and timing, instead of splitting your attention between multiple strikes.
2. Real Skill Improvement
Conscious repetition is the key to transforming a technique from “known” to “mastered”.
- Muscle Memory Development : Through consistent, focused work, movement becomes an automatic reflex, ready to be performed even under pressure.
- Technical Insight : You can focus on aspects that are often overlooked, such as the angle of the strike, the rotation of the torso or the energy transmitted from the feet to the fist.
Example : A low kick trained with this approach becomes not only more powerful, but also more precise and strategic, ready to destabilize any opponent.
3. Adaptability
Precise Focus doesn’t just perfect a technique: it teaches you how to apply it in real, unpredictable situations.
- Preparation Against Unpredictable Opponents : Working on a shot or technique knowing that your training partner will try to counter it forces you to be more creative and adaptable.
- Context Control : You learn to recognize when and how to use a technique based on distance, opponent’s position and the pace of the fight.
- Effectiveness under stress : Targeted training develops confidence and ready-to-use skills even under pressure.
Example : Practicing a straight right punch against an opponent who is aware of your intent improves your ability to disguise and adapt it, making it effective even against experienced opponents.
4. Feedback and Adjustments
The focused approach allows you to receive immediate feedback and make corrections in real time, continuously improving.
- Using Video for Analysis : Recording your sessions helps you see details you might not notice during your workout. You can observe your balance, posture, and execution, identifying areas for improvement.
- Coach Support : With a targeted focus, coaches can provide specific, detailed advice, resulting in rapid, targeted progress.
- Iterative learning : Constant analysis and small adjustments transform a good technique into an excellent technique.
Example : If during the work on the right jab you notice on video that your guard is lowering too much, you can correct it immediately, improving the protection during the execution.
The Precise Focus method is not just a training system, but a path of personal and technical growth. Every aspect of your training becomes clearer, every minute more productive and every technique more effective.
With Precision Focus, you’re not just learning to fight better—you’re building skills that actually work, ready to respond to any situation.

Key Points of the Precise Focus Method
The Precise Focus method is structured in fundamental steps that guide you through a path of continuous learning and improvement. Each phase is designed to refine the techniques and make them effective in real situations.
1. Progressive Stroke Training
A gradual approach is essential to master each technique with precision, speed and power.
- Technique :
Start by executing the stroke slowly, focusing on biomechanics and precision. Each movement must be controlled, so as to build a solid base. - Speed :
Increase the pace gradually, maintaining the accuracy you have acquired. This step helps you to execute the stroke fluidly even at higher speeds. - Power :
Integrate strength only when movements become natural and controlled. Effective power comes from flawless technique. - Posture and Distance :
Constantly analyze your position and the ideal distance to execute the shot. A correct posture allows you to transfer energy efficiently and maintain balance.
Example : When working on a right jab, focus on body alignment from the push of the foot to the punch, making sure the guard remains high and the distance is adequate.
2. Combinations and Integration
An isolated strike is useful, but becomes devastating when integrated into fluid and unpredictable combinations.
- Dynamic Sequences :
Create combinations that include the chosen strike, using it as both an opener and a finisher. This teaches you to fit it into natural fighting flows. - Tempo and Pacing Variations :
Explore different timings to make combinations less predictable. Change pace or intensity to confuse your opponent.
Example : Integrate a low kick after a series of punches (jab-cross-low kick) to destabilize the opponent’s balance.
3. Parades and Defenses
Knowing a technique also means knowing how to counter it. This improves your ability to adapt and develop strategies.
- Weak Point Study :
Work with a partner who executes the strike against you, learning to dodge, block or neutralize it. - Effective Countermeasures :
Use weakness analysis to develop immediate and strategic responses.
Example : If the focus is on a roundhouse kick, practice blocking it with a shin block or dodging it with a side step.
4. Feints and Deceptions
Feints are a fundamental strategic weapon, allowing you to control the pace of combat and confuse your opponent.
- Mask Intentions :
Work on movements that simulate the strike to induce the opponent to react in a predictable way. - Control the Fight :
Use feints to create openings or manipulate your opponent’s position to your advantage.
Example : Fake a jab to get your opponent to raise his guard, then follow up with a straight punch to the body or a low kick.
5. Focused Sparring
Sparring is the testing ground for the Precise Focus method, where you can test the strike under realistic conditions.
- Deliberate Use of the Strike :
Focus on using the chosen strike frequently, integrating it into your strategies. This allows you to experiment with how to apply it in different situations. - Aware Opponent :
Facing a partner who knows your focus forces you to be more creative and perfect your timing, precision and deception.
Example : If you are working on a left hook, try to use it in different sparring situations, varying angles and combinations to make it unpredictable.

Extension of the Precise Focus Method to Fighting
The Precise Focus method is not limited to striking, but also finds perfect application in grappling and wrestling. The philosophy remains the same: isolate one element, work on it intensively and focused, and develop a complete understanding of its biomechanics, application, and strategic context. Here’s how to adapt it:
1. Focus on a Single Projection
An effective throw requires precision, timing and control of the opponent. The Precise Focus method allows you to explore every aspect of the movement.
- Off-Balance : Learn how to break your opponent’s balance using leverage, angles and body movements.
- Entry : Perfect the positioning and timing needed to get into the ideal position.
- Execution : Work on the fluidity of movement, directed energy and final impact.
- Post-Throw Transitions : After performing the throw, practice how to immediately transition into a dominant position (side control, mount, etc.).
Example : If you are working on a double-leg takedown, you will spend time studying how to break the balance, enter with the legs in the correct position, complete the movement with controlled force, and transition into an advantageous position.
2. Study of Transitions
Grappling is all about continuity and fluidity. Isolating a specific transition helps you improve your ability to move between positions without leaving openings for your opponent.
- Fluidity of Movement : Practice moving from one position to another with control and precision.
- Adaptability : Simulate scenarios where the opponent tries to block or counter your transition and develop effective solutions.
- Energy efficiency : Work on movements that minimize physical effort, maximizing results.
Example : If you are perfecting the transition from side control to mount, focus on applying pressure, controlling your opponent’s hips, and creating space for your knees to move.
3. Submissions and Countermoves
Submissions are powerful tools, but they require precision and strategy. The Precise Focus method helps you master them and understand how to defend them.
- Execution : Work on submission mechanics (e.g. joint lock, choke), making sure they are effective even against resistant opponents.
- Counters : Practice how to recognize and neutralize the submission before it is fully applied.
- Strategic Setup : Learn to hide your intentions and create openings for the application of the technique.
Example : If you’re working on an armbar from the guard, focus on arm control, leg placement, and the ideal angle, as well as practicing how to quickly transition into a variation if your opponent tries to defend.
4. Simulations of Specific Scenarios
Training grappling techniques with a precise focus becomes even more powerful if you insert them into realistic simulations:
- Scenario 1 : You are working on a rear-naked choke in a self-defense setting. Practice getting into back control, blocking your opponent’s escape attempts, and applying the submission safely.
- Scenario 2 : You are trying to defend against a kimura in the side control position. Practice recognizing the initial signs of the technique and effectively countering it.
Benefits of Extension to Fight
- Deep Understanding : Working on a single movement or transition allows you to understand technical and strategic details that are often overlooked.
- Improved Responsiveness : Training against partners who try to neutralize your focus teaches you to adapt in real time.
- Real Effectiveness : Techniques not only become part of your repertoire, but become truly applicable against uncooperative opponents.
The Precise Focus method in grappling is not just a technical training, but a way to transform every projection, transition or submission into a functional and strategic tool. The systematic approach prepares you to dominate every aspect of the fight, making your techniques fluid, effective and ready to use in any situation.

Practical Implementation with Blocks: An Innovative and Engaging Training
The use of engraved wooden blocks is a brilliant idea that makes training more challenging, creative and versatile. This system introduces an element of randomness that pushes practitioners out of their comfort zone, exploring strokes, techniques and strategies that are often overlooked. Here’s how to apply it in a practical and structured way.
1. Creating Blocks
The blocks must be customized to represent different aspects of combat.
- Left Side : Indicates the type of strike or technique (e.g. punch, kick, knee, elbow, hold, throw).
- Right Side : Specifies the target zone (e.g. high, medium, low, empty – meaning freedom of choice).
- Strategy Pads : Some pads may contain symbols such as “stand-up wrestling,” “grappling,” or “mixed strategy,” to indicate the context of the training.
2. Focus Assignment
The coach or practitioner draws a pad at the beginning of the session to determine the focus of the day. This random method ensures that each session is different, avoiding monotony and encouraging the development of more complete skills.
Example :
- Block: Fist – Middle Zone
- Focus: Throughout the session, the practitioner will work on direct strikes and combinations that target the opponent’s torso, improving technique, power and accuracy.
3. Focus-Based Exercises
Once the focus is assigned, the training is structured to delve deeper into the selected element.
- Phase 1: Technical Study
Start with slow, analytical movements to understand the biomechanics of the shot or technique. For example, if the focus is a low kick, the practitioner will study the movement of the leg, the twisting of the torso and the ideal point of impact.
- Phase 2: Combinations and Integration
Insert the focus into sequences of two or more strikes or techniques, working on fluidity and effectiveness. For example, combine a low kick with a left jab and a right hook to create a dynamic sequence.
- Phase 3: Parries and Defenses
Practice neutralizing the selected strike or technique, both as a defensive partner and as an attacker. This helps to understand the weak points and strengthen the practical application. - Phase 4: Sparring with Focus
During sparring, the practitioner must frequently use the assigned technique, integrating it into broader strategies. The opponent, aware of the focus, must learn to neutralize it, increasing the challenge and improving adaptability.
4. Benefits of Block Training
- Complete Exploration : Forces practitioners to work on techniques they might otherwise avoid, making them more versatile.
- Challenge and Creativity : The element of chance adds interest and encourages thinking outside the box.
- Adaptability : Training on a focus that is known to your partner prepares you to fight against opponents who read and anticipate your moves.
- Accelerated Learning : Working on specific techniques with high repetition and attention to detail accelerates the learning process.
5. Variants and Customizations
You can adapt the idea of blocks to the needs of your training group:
- Cards Instead of Pads : Use cards with symbols and specific instructions.
- Difficulty Levels : Add blocks with increasing difficulty levels (e.g. “Use only feints to set up the shot”).
- Bonus Objectives : Insert blocks with extra objectives, such as “hit with the assigned strike at least 5 times in sparring.”
Implementing blocks turns each session into a unique and challenging experience. It is a way to keep motivation high, push practitioners to continuously improve and prepare for real situations in a structured and fun way.

Story of a Real Experience or Anecdote: Yemi’s Revenge
Imagine Yemi, a martial artist with years of experience, known for his determination and ability to adapt. His favorite punch? A powerful, hard right jab, but during sparring, it seemed to lose its effectiveness. Opponents anticipated it, dodged it, or parried it with ease.
Every session ended with the same frustration. “Why doesn’t my jab work when I really need it?” he wondered.
One day, his instructor proposed a different solution: the Precise Focus method . For a week, Yemi would work only on his right jab, analyzing every detail of the shot.
- He started slow , focusing on biomechanics, energy transfer from feet to fist, trunk rotation.
- He studied timing , figuring out when was the perfect moment to throw the shot.
- He explored combinations , inserting the jab into unpredictable sequences.
- He worked on feints , learning to hide his intentions to catch opponents off guard.
When Yemi returned to sparring, the change was obvious. His right jab had become unpredictable, accurate and devastating. Even his most experienced training partners struggled to counter it.
“I never thought that dedicating myself to just one shot could turn it into something so effective,” Yemi said with a satisfied smile.
His experience proves one thing: no matter how trivial a single shot seems, with the right focus it can become your most lethal weapon.
And you? What is the shot you want to transform? Discover the Precise Focus method and make the difference!

This is a method based on having days with a precise focus and designed to try to “isolate” on a specific shot, thus applying a method or if you like a training system that helps beginners in particular.
This method is effective because it is less dispersive and allows you to concentrate your work on a single shot and its combinations , allowing you to isolate and learn a lot from yourself.
Focusing on applying single shots or techniques allows you to learn how to make it work because often you know a lot of techniques but you don’t know how to make them work with an uncooperative partner which is the basis of my method .
This method is also very useful in fighting but I will tell you about it in a specific article.
Happy training with your ” focus of the day “!
